As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend
Hello, my name is Raquel Riley. I am from the island Grand Bahama; known as the second city. At the age of 12, I developed a passion in a field that has alluded most Bahamians. I became addicted to the game of golf. For that passion to be realized there were many people that became involve. One person that comes to mind often is Mr. Lou Parker.
Mr. Parker dedicated his free time to at risk kids in the community of eight-mile rock while working a career at the Ministry of Works. He would come out the Bahamas Junior Golf program at the Ruby Golf course with kids from his program. He was determined to give them another outcome in life. It is through him that I learned to true meaning of charity.
After a while, Mr. Parker was elected as Director of the Bahamas Junior Golf Association and under his leadership I was able to experience tournaments for the first time. I went on to play Collage golf, Professional Golf and now I’m working at one of the Bahamas’ prime golf clubs as an Assistant Head Professional.
There have been countless others that have poured into my development and led me on the path of giving back also. I have given of my time and resources to help my church with food drives; The red cross of Grand Bahamas with clothes drives and most recently the Discovery Land Foundation. A foundation out of Arizona that is an arm of the Discovery Land Company, a company that I’ve had an amazing 10-year relationship as Assistant Golf Professional at Bakers Bay Golf & Ocean Club on Guana Cay, Abaco.
Together with the Abaco Rescue Fund led by Beth Warren, the Discovery Land Foundation organized ways of getting people back on their feet after what is known to be the most horrific storm that has ever entered our region. After Dorian, people thought life as we knew it on little Abaco was over! It was the most devastating event that I have faced to date.
Now today, after assisting with numerous acts of charity from food drives to rebuilding entire homes and churches, I understand the power of giving back! Because of this I will continue to spread the one thing I believe keeps us all going……HOPE!
